The native people of the places where they live called hermit crabs "tree crabs, " the "purple pincer land hermit crab, " or "soldier crabs." They were called "soldier crabs" because people in the Caribbean tell stories about hermit crab migrations saving them from enemies. Invaders would come to take over the islands, and they would hear so much noise from all the chirping movement by thousands of hermit crabs on the beaches that they were actually frightened away. A hermit crab's life is mobile. As a baby, it finds an empty mollusk shell to call home. As it grows, it leaves its shell behind and finds a larger, ore comfortable one to move into.
